There is a site around 60 km north of Nordegg, Alberta, where a healthy grizzly bear population flourishes alongside other wildlife, such as black bears, moose, elk and several bird species, and a wide variety of plants.
You would never guess that less than 10 years ago, this vibrant wetland was a lease site.
We began the reclamation process on this site in 2010. Over the course of a year, we re-introduced native plant species to the area, taking care to ensure the variety of plants was diverse and well-balanced enough to create an inviting and sustainable habitat for the grizzly bears and other wildlife native to the area.
We continued to monitor and manage vegetation for the next few years, making adjustments where necessary to reduce weeds and invasive species, and to ensure native plants were able to thrive.
It wasn’t long before animals started moving in, and the population continues to grow year after year. The variety of wildlife in the habitat is a testament to the value of well-planned, high quality reclamation. Good decisions, precise planning and careful monitoring at the beginning of the project set into motion an entire ecosystem that is now able to sustain itself, and will provide a good home for wildlife for many years to come.
